J129: Pair Foo Lion Jade Urns ~ 19th cen
This is an extremely rare and very old pair of soft
jade urns. They have a Foo Lion motif facing each other. There are hanging
rings carved from solid stone with all the features carved with great detail.
The urns are hollowed out no doubt for funeral purposes. The lids
are winged Foo Lions that fit perfectly into the recesses. The stone appears
to be jade with fabulous colors changing all through it, however it is
"soft jade" (can scratch with a knife blade). They stand on intricately
carved rosewood stands (works of art in themselves). Note: There must of
been a fault in the stone as there is an ancient crack running through
the front legs on one (see bottom pic). This is fine as they are
wired to the stands and are stable.
They stand 15" tall counting the 2" stand.
Circa mid 19th century (or earlier)
