This is an exquisite matched pair of Japanese Meiji
period bronze vases. Rarely do we find a matched pair still roaming around.
They are cast in the traditional high quality fashion that has made the
Japanese bronzes so sought after. The rim is double worked with an applied
phoenix on each side of the neck. The center part is cast in high relief
with designs of branches, flowers, and birds. The applied legs are intricately
cast with much "see through". And then there is the base with high relief
designs. Since the legs are attached
with very old "rivets", time has loosened them
somewhat on one vase, but not to the point to cause concern (still stands
straight and well). They have the nicest deepest patina consistent with
the period. They stand a glorious 12 ½" tall and display very well.
They are a thick heavy pair weighing in at 3.6 lbs. each. They are pristine
with the very tiny exception of a tiny tiny ding that can only be seen
when the light hits it a certain way (still amazing after 100+ years).
This is definitely a pair to draw to….
Circa probably late 19th century
